The city of Fountain was founded in 1859 and began as a railroad shipping center for all the local ranchers and farmers in the area. Another important date in this community’s history is “The Blast” that took place in 1888. In May of 1888 there was a collision between a freight train and a passenger train. The freight train was carrying eighteen tons of explosives and the passenger train was full of people. Luckily quite a few people were able to escape the train and avoid the collision, however lots of people were injured, and several structures destroyed. The collision was suspected to be caused by two disgruntled men who were kicked off the train. Unfortunately, this crime was never brought to justice, and there is a commemoration dance and get together held every year at Fountain’s City Hall Plaza in the summer.
