More on Austin Heights in Colorado Springs

Living in Austin Heights

Conveniently located near each of the military bases in Colorado Springs makes Austin Estates an ideal location for military families to call home.

Peterson Air Force Base can be found to the east, Schriever Air Force Base just beyond Peterson Air Force Base and only about a fifteen-minute drive to Fort Carson. There are plenty of shopping opportunities with Austin Heights having major streets surrounding the neighborhood on all sides. The Citadel Mall is to the south as well as the Academy corridor shops, the Pioneer Plaza offering everyday shopping, and several movie theaters and restaurants for a night out.

Colorado Springs is a very active community, in fact, it's almost as if athletes are grown here. Colorado Springs has sent more athletes to the Olympic games than any other state in America. Commonly, Colorado Springs is referred to as the Olympic City as it is home to the United States Olympic Committee Headquarters and the Olympic Training Center

Colorado Springs generally has dry, sunny weather making outdoor activities ideal and opportunities to get out, be active and stay healthy. Occasionally, Colorado Springs does get a snowstorm but, it doesn't usually amount to much in comparison to the nearby city of Denver. Colorado Springs has hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails throughout as well as stunning geographical features like Garden of the Gods and Seven Falls. Garden of the Gods is a public park that features large formations of red sandstone rocks and Seven Falls is a set of cascading waterfalls that are tucked between residential areas of town. Pikes Peak offers spectacular views that make driving up the mountain well worth it. Skiing and snowboarding are available within a few hour's drive to ski resorts such as Vail or Aspen for even more recreation opportunities.

While Colorado Springs is more expensive than the national average; however residents here tend to spend less money and the average income is on par with the national average. The city is fairly walkable, mostly in the historic downtown area but, a car is generally necessary to get around. There is public bus transportation available in the downtown area and along major thoroughfares with limited service through residential neighborhoods. There is a municipal airport that makes connections to Denver for national and international destinations more convenient.

Schools in Austin Heights

Austin Heights residents are part of the largest school district in the region, Colorado Springs School District 11 offering a challenging curriculum, college readiness, and various academic options to students. Being in such a large school district there is a wide range of ratings among the schools.

According to Greatschools.org, James Irwin Charter school was given an excellent 8/10 rating, Globe Charter School, Rudy Elementary School, Thomas Maclaren State Charter School, Atlas Preparatory High School, Sand Creek International Elementary School James Irwin Charter Elementary School and Soaring Eagles Elementary School all received a 7/10 rating, Wildflower Elementary School, James Irwin Charter Middle School, Atlas Preparatory Middle School, Horizon Middle School, Springs Studio for Academic Excellence, Penrose Elementary School all received a 6/10 rating. While these ratings are above-average ratings, there are several still with average or below-average ratings, again this is the largest school district in the region so with any large school districts there are going to be some schools that will struggle to match their counterparts.
