More About Black Forest in Colorado Springs

Living in Black Forest

Black Forest is an unincorporated neighborhood in El Paso County, approximately twenty miles from downtown Colorado Springs. The Black Forest area consists of approximately 200,000 acres of rolling, forested hills. This area was appropriately named Black Forest due to the heavily forested Ponderosa Pines, and when viewed from the summit of Pikes Peak, this area appears to be a vast black mass. Black Forest is attractive to residents because of the rural, private feel, yet conveniently close to the city for more amenities. The average commute into Downtown Colorado Springs is about a 30 to 45-minute drive.

The weather in Black Forest is slightly cooler and receives slightly more accumulation than other Colorado Springs areas due to the elevation difference. Black Forest sits at about 7,000 feet, which generally creates a higher than average snowfall than most Colorado Springs.

Black Forest offers plenty to do, including Black Forest Regional Park, which provides visitors with BBQ grills, hiking and biking trails, pavilions and picnic tables, a playground, tennis courts, and soccer fields. The 385-acre park is filled with ponderosa pine trees, amazing views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range.

Honestly, most residents benefit from what it feels like living in a park right out their front or back door.

Schools in Black Forest

Due to the large size of Black Forest, multiple school districts serve the residents here. Academy School District 20 serves the residents in the southern portion of Black Forest. This school district maintains 7 high schools, 8 middle schools, and 22 elementary schools with additional charter and alternative schools.

Academy School District 20 is one of the largest and most popular school districts in El Paso County. These are just a sampling of what the Academy School District can offer the Black Forest residents.

The Lewis-Palmer School District 38 provides education opportunities to the north and western portion of Black Forest. District 38 includes 5 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 2 high schools, and a few charters and alternative schools.

According to Greatschools.org, Prairie Winds Elementary swept an outstanding 9/10 rating, Lewis-Palmer Elementary, Bear Creek Elementary, and Lewis-Palmer High School all received a rating of 8/10, Ray E Kilmer Elementary received a 7/10 rating, Palmer Lake Elementary and Lewis-Palmer Middle School received 6/10 ratings and Monument Charter School received a 5/10 rating. These schools receiving average or above-average ratings is quite an accomplishment for a school district to achieve.

Finally, the Falcon School District 49 serves the eastern portion of Black Forest. This district currently holds the title of the fastest-growing school district in El Paso County. Currently, the district is home to 3 high schools, 3 middle schools, 11 elementary schools, and several alternative and charter schools.

According to Greatschools.org, Peyton Elementary School and Woodmen Hills Elementary School achieved a rating of 7/10, Pikes Peak School Expeditionary Learning, Falcon Elementary School of Technology and Falcon Middle School all received a 6/10 rating, Peyton Senior High, Meridian Ranch Elementary, Bennett Ranch Elementary and Liberty Tree Academy all received 5/10 ratings, Falcon High School received a 4/10 rating, and Peyton Online Academy came in with 2/10 rating. So, while Falcon School District still has some work to do with some of their schools, most accomplish an average or above-average rating.
